WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25, 2012— The Corporate Chain of Screaming, a concept developed by the characters on the hit TV showHow I Met Your Mother, is a relatable concept for anyone who’s ever had a high-stress job. To deal with stress in the workplace, a boss yells at his or her subordinate, who in turn yells at his or her subordinate, and so on — until the person at the very bottom of the corporate food chain is the one bearing the brunt of the stress.

If this sounds familiar, instead of more screaming, a solution might be as simple as suggesting your boss hit the gym. No, not because they need to lose weight (you should make that clear), but rather because study after study has found exercise to be one of the best ways to relieve stress. In fact, a new study published in theJournal of Business and Psychologyfound that the Corporate Chain of Screaming is a real phenomenon — bosses really do take workplace stress out on their employees — and all that screaming can be soothed by a session at the gym.

In the study, which was conducted at the University of Northern Illinois, 98 employees and their supervisors completed questionnaires, rating how abusive they found their bosses to be. Supervisors answered questions about workplace stress, rating agreement or disagreement to statements such as "working my current job leaves me little time for other activities," or "I have too much work and too little time to do it in."

Researchers concluded that when supervisors were stressed, their employees felt more victimized. However, when bosses sweated out their frustrations with regular exercise, their subordinates reported lower levels of abuse from their bosses.

This study offers a fresh take on exercising to reduce stress, which is nothing new. A study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, found that vigorous exercise a few times a week significantly reduced chronic stress in women.
