Life is filled with constant change
As we grow, mature and learn
Unfortunately it’s not all mental as
Our bodies sometime take a turn.
Yet, each of us is amazed
Because life doesn’t stay the same;
Relationships, jobs and health
In a flash can rearrange.
Each time the hand of fate comes down
We face surprise and shock
Because we want it all to stay the same
We learn early how to pitch a squawk.
Accidents, bad planning and stupidity
Can throw us into a spin;
It seems we’re always trying tocope,
To adjust, never dreaming we could win.
As we struggle to adjust our Rubik’s cube
We blame ourselves when struck by fate,
And we face fear, self-blame and loathing
And try to give up, “That’s it, it’s just too late.”
Yet, deep within us, after the initial surprise
Is this glimmer of faith and hope;
As gradually we grow sick of wallowing
And drag ourselves up by that towrope.
We ask ourselves, what are we to do?
Where do I go from here?
Our vulnerability leaves us raw
In the mirror each day, we see the face offear.
We have varied emotions for what is gone
As we grieve, remember and pine for the past.
We must remind ourselves each day
Few conditions in life really last.
Griefhas to eventually end
As we access all we have left.
By allowing our faith to grow
We begin feeling less bereft.
That which is gone is dead to us
But we are still alive.
We begin to search our minds and hearts
For new talents and dreams to survive.
We’ve learned we’re not invincible
But we do still exist and have breath
As we align ourselves with the basics
And realize, “Hey, this is life not death.”
We sit down with a pen and paper
Or perhaps our laptop at our side,
And list all that we have left
As we begin to heal this internal divide.
For as long as we believe in life
And don’t give up on it,
There are answers to be found
With determination we won’t quit.
We have to carefully feed our souls
Only that which is pure and true
Putting aside bitterness and anger
We seek to change our point of view.
We rejoice at budding flowers
See the new leaves popping out on trees
As we realize life is about renewal
And we are one of these.
