DIY INEXPENSIVE OUTDOOR CAT HOUSE

How to Make a Kitten Cage

Steps

  1. Get a box you think will be big enough for your kitty.
  2. Cut some small holes (about 1 inch or 25 mm in diameter is good) for air exchange in the box.
  3. Make sure the bottom is secure, and reinforce it if necessary.
  4. Take a plastic bag that will fit at the bottom of the box.Use it to line the bottom so urine will not soak through, should your kitten have an accident.
  5. Shred up some paper and put it in one side of the box.
  6. Put some old towels in the other side of the box.
  7. Finally, put the kitten in and put something on top as a cover.

Won't it make the kitten uncomfortable?

Cages are not intended to make animals comfortable. Despite what you may think, taking a cat to the vets should not be a happy experience if you are going in a car. You don't want your cat to learn to like cars, it is more likely to get run over. However, to make a cat more comfortable, put in an old piece of clothing with your smell on it. If a cat is really upset though, they may wet themselves, so put in plenty of newspaper underneath.
    Thanks!
  • Question
We have a feral cat due to give birth in about 3 weeks. There is another male feral cat that we feed as well. I am concerned about the male being around the birthing mother and kittens. Can this be a problem and how do we deal with it?
    Community Answer
Make the mother a safe zone. Create a little fenced in or netted area where the mother can feel safe and protect her kittens, roughly 2-3 feet with blankets and towels. If the male cat tries to sniff it out, do not be surprised if the mother attacks.
    Thanks!
  • Question
If our cat is claustrophobic, and this cage is a must, how should we teach him to be comfortable in the box?

Use an old piece of clothing with your scent on it. Possibly add a hot water bottle, a favorite toy, or some cat treats.
    Thanks!
