This year, the City of Melbourne welcomes MPavilion a concept that was initiated by philanthropist and business woman Naomi Milgrom. For the next four years from October to February over spring and summer, a section of the Queen Victoria Gardens (opposite the National Gallery of Victoria) will play host to the pavilion. Within the pavilion, an impressive and diverse program of events will unfold, including talks, workshops, live performances and installations devised by dozens of Melbourne’s creative forces. Including collaborations with cultural programs such as Melbourne Festival and Melbourne Music week, every event is free and open to the public. By night, the 12 x 12 metre steel structure is an enclosed unassuming cube-like space, however every morning at 8am during the Daily Opening Ceremony (accompanied by a specially created soundscape) the walls slowly unfurl as if they were a flower opening to the sun.
Within MPavilion, an impressive and diverse free public program of events will unfold, including talks, workshops, live performances and installations devised by dozens of Melbourne’s creative forces. Staff working at the venue will be swathed in a uniform designed by local fashion label Alpha 60, (who will also be celebrating their 10th anniversary by unveiling their Winter 2015 collection at the ALPHA60 X event).
Curated by Natalie King, The One Night Stand Events bring a trio of live installations to MPavilion that respond to the ephemeral and transient nature of MPavilion, including ‘Wearing the City‘ – a playful exploration of the relationship between architecture and fashion. Students from Monash University Art Design and Architecture will create wearable versions of iconic Melbourne buildings, and present the outcome on Saturday 15 November.
